Description
The CoaguChek XS PT Test PST is an in-vitro diagnostic assay used to determine Prothrombin Time (PT). It uses human recombinant tissue factor to trigger coagulation in a blood sample. The meter then measures the electrochemical reaction to calculate your INR (International Normalized Ratio). These strips are typically sold in vials of 24 or 48.
Key Features
- Top & Side Application: The strips are designed with a "Y-shaped" capillary window, allowing you to apply the blood drop from the top or either side.
- On-Board Quality Control: Every single strip contains an internal quality control (a "liquid QC") that the meter checks automatically during the test. If the strip is damaged or expired, the meter will throw an error.
- Temperature Stability: They can be stored at room temperature ($2^{\circ}\text{C}$ to $30^{\circ}\text{C}$), so you don't need to keep them in the fridge.
- Low Volume Requirement: Requires only $8\mu L$ of blood, which is about the size of a large teardrop.
- Heparin Insensitive: The strips are generally not affected by therapeutic levels of Heparin (up to 0.8 U/mL), making them reliable for patients transitioning between medications.
Uses
- Primary Function: To monitor the effectiveness of Vitamin K Antagonist (VKA) medications like Warfarin or Coumadin.
- Self-Monitoring: Designed for patients to use at home, providing a result in about 60 seconds, which helps avoid frequent trips to the pathology lab.
- Immediate Dosing Guidance: Provides the data needed to determine if your current "blood thinner" dose is keeping you within your physician's recommended therapeutic range.
Safety Warning: These strips are only for patients on Warfarin/VKAs. They are not used for monitoring newer "NOAC" or "DOAC" medications like Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) or Eliquis (Apixaban).
