Description

Evra Transdermal Patches by Janssen are a weekly combined hormonal contraceptive that delivers steady, low-dose hormones through the skin to help prevent pregnancy. Each pack of 3 patches covers a full 21-day cycle, with one patch applied each week for three weeks followed by a patch-free fourth week. When used correctly, the Evra contraceptive patch is more than 99% effective, offering a convenient alternative to daily oral pills for women seeking reliable, prescription-guided birth control in the UAE.

How It Works

Each Evra patch contains two hormones: norelgestromin, a progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, an estrogen. Together they prevent pregnancy through three coordinated mechanisms. First, they suppress ovulation by inhibiting the release of an egg from the ovaries. Second, they thicken cervical mucus so sperm cannot easily pass through. Third, they alter the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to implantation. Transdermal delivery avoids gastrointestinal absorption variability and first-pass liver metabolism associated with oral contraceptives.

Important Safety Information

Evra is a prescription-only medicine and must be initiated and supervised by a licensed doctor. It is not suitable for women with a history of blood clots, certain cancers, severe migraines with aura, uncontrolled high blood pressure, liver disease, BMI of 30 or above, or who smoke and are over 35. Combined hormonal contraceptives carry a small but increased risk of venous thromboembolism. Consult your doctor before starting, and seek urgent medical attention if you experience leg pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches or vision changes during use.

Ingredients

Each 20 cm² transdermal patch contains:

• Norelgestromin 6 mg: a synthetic progestin that releases approximately 203 micrograms into the bloodstream every 24 hours.

• Ethinylestradiol 0.6 mg (600 micrograms): a synthetic estrogen that releases approximately 33.9 micrograms into the bloodstream every 24 hours.

• The patch is a thin, flexible matrix-type system with three layers: a backing layer, a hormone-containing adhesive layer and a protective release liner that is removed before application.

Manufactured by Janssen-Cilag (Johnson & Johnson). Steady-state hormone concentrations are achieved within 48 hours of first application.

How to Use

Always follow your doctor's prescription and the patient information leaflet. General application guidance:

1. Apply the first patch on day 1 of your menstrual cycle to a clean, dry, hair-free area of skin.

2. Choose one of four approved sites: the abdomen, buttock, upper outer arm or upper torso. Never apply to the breasts or to broken, red or irritated skin.

3. Wear the same patch continuously for 7 days, then replace it with a new patch on the same day of the week, choosing a different application site.

4. Repeat this routine for 3 weeks (3 patches total), then have a patch-free week 4 during which a withdrawal bleed will usually occur.

5. Start the next pack on the same day of the week as your previous cycle began, even if bleeding has not finished.

6. Press the patch firmly against the skin for 10 seconds, ensuring edges adhere well. Check daily and avoid direct external heat sources such as saunas or heating pads.
