Description
Glucophage 1000mg tablets contain metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide agent used for the systemic management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This high-potency formulation provides physiological support by reducing hepatic gluconeogenesis, decreasing intestinal glucose absorption, and enhancing peripheral insulin sensitivity. It is clinically indicated as a first-line treatment for glycemic control, particularly in overweight patients when dietary intervention and physical activity are insufficient.
Dosage & Administration
For effective glycemic regulation and to minimize gastrointestinal distress, follow these administration protocols:
- Standard Adult Dosage: Administer 1000mg (1 tablet) twice daily.
- Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 3000mg per day, typically divided into three doses of 1000mg.
- Titration: Dosage increases should be performed gradually, in increments of 500mg or 850mg every 10 to 15 days, based on blood glucose monitoring.
- Timing: Administer during or immediately after meals to improve gastrointestinal tolerance.
- Method of Administration: Swallow tablets whole with water. Do not crush or chew the tablets.
- Frequency: Usually administered 2 to 3 times per day with meals.
Safety & Storage
- Contraindications: Do not use in patients with severe renal failure (eGFR <30 mL/min), acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function (dehydration, severe infection), or acute/chronic metabolic acidosis.
- Warning: Risk of Lactic Acidosis. Therapy should be temporarily discontinued during procedures involving iodinated contrast media or general anesthesia.
- Monitoring: Regular assessment of renal function (eGFR) and Vitamin B12 levels is mandatory during long-term administration.
- Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry environment. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
