Description
Glucophage XR 500mg tablets contain metformin hydrochloride in a prolonged-release dual-polymer matrix delivery system. This pharmacological agent provides physiological support for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral insulin sensitivity. The extended-release (XR) mechanism allows for a gradual delivery of the active ingredient, resulting in reduced gastrointestinal side effects and improved patient compliance compared to immediate-release formulations.
Dosage & Administration
To maintain stable glycemic control and ensure the efficacy of the extended-release mechanism, adhere to the following protocols:
- Initial Adult Dosage: Administer 500mg (1 tablet) once daily.
- Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 2000mg (4 tablets) per day.
- Timing: Administer once daily with the evening meal to optimize absorption and nocturnal glycemic control.
- Method of Administration: Swallow tablets whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets, as this destroys the extended-release matrix and increases the risk of dose-dumping.
- Frequency: Standard administration is once daily. If glycemic control is not achieved at 2000mg once daily, a divided dose of 1000mg twice daily may be considered.
Safety & Storage
- Patient Note: The inactive tablet shell may occasionally be excreted intact in the stool; this does not indicate a loss of therapeutic efficacy.
- Storage: Store at room temperature below 30°C. Keep in original packaging to protect from moisture and ensure child safety.
