Metrolag 500mg/100ml IV Infusion (100ml Vial)

Description

Metrolag is a sterile, ready-to-use intravenous (IV) solution containing Metronidazole, a potent synthetic antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent. It is specifically used to treat serious infections caused by anaerobic bacteria (organisms that live without oxygen) and certain parasites. This IV form is typically reserved for hospitalized patients or those who cannot take medication by mouth.

Active ingredient:

Metronidazole

Therapeutic Indications

  • Severe Anaerobic Infections: Used for serious infections in the abdomen (peritonitis, abscesses), pelvis, brain, lungs (necrotizing pneumonia), and bones (osteomyelitis).
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: Administered shortly before, during, or after surgery (especially abdominal, colorectal, or gynecological procedures) to prevent postoperative infections.
  • Sepsis & Bacteremia: Treatment of bloodstream infections where anaerobic bacteria are suspected.
  • Parasitic Infections: While often treated orally, the IV route can be used for severe cases of amebiasis or other protozoal infections when necessary.

Key Product Information

  • Composition: Each 100ml vial contains 500mg of Metronidazole (5mg/ml) in an isotonic buffered solution.
  • Route of Administration: For Intravenous Infusion Only. It must be administered slowly, usually over a period of 20 to 60 minutes.
  • Mechanism: It enters the DNA of the microorganism and disrupts its structure, leading to rapid cell death of the bacteria or parasite.
  • 1. Temperature Requirements
Store at Room Temperature: Keep the vials or bags between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • DO NOT REFRIGERATE: Unlike many other IV medications, metronidazole should never be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.
    • Reason: Cold temperatures cause the metronidazole to "precipitate" (turn into solid crystals). If you see crystals in the solution, it cannot be used unless they are fully redissolved by gentle warming to room temperature.

2. Light Sensitivity

  • Protect from Light: Metronidazole is photosensitive. Keep the vials in their original outer carton or overwrap until the moment you are ready to use them.
  • Brief Exposure: While the solution should be shielded from direct sunlight during administration, short-term exposure to standard indoor fluorescent light is generally considered safe and will not cause immediate degradation.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Nausea, metallic taste in the mouth, and darkening of urine (harmless).
  • Serious: Seizures, dizziness, confusion, or severe allergic reactions.
