How It Works

Xylocaine works by blocking sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, preventing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. When sprayed onto mucous membranes such as the mouth, throat, or nasal passages, lidocaine penetrates tissue rapidly due to the absence of a keratinised layer, producing profound surface anaesthesia within 1 to 5 minutes. The numbing effect lasts approximately 15 to 30 minutes, providing sufficient time for short clinical procedures while minimising patient discomfort and reflex gagging during intubation or instrumentation.
