How It Works

Albendazole, the active ingredient in Zentel, belongs to the benzimidazole carbamate class of anthelmintics. It works by selectively binding to beta-tubulin in parasite cells, inhibiting microtubule polymerisation. This disrupts the worms' ability to absorb glucose - their primary energy source - leading to depletion of ATP (cellular energy), progressive immobilisation, and death of both adult worms and their larvae and eggs. Albendazole is metabolised in the liver to its active form, albendazole sulfoxide, which is distributed systemically, enabling effectiveness against both intestinal and tissue-dwelling parasites. No special preparation such as fasting or purging is required before or after treatment.

Zentel Suspension is effective against the following intestinal parasites:

• Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm / threadworm)

• Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm)

• Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworms)

• Trichuris trichiura (whipworm)

• Taenia species (tapeworm)

• Strongyloides stercoralis

• Giardia lamblia (giardiasis)

Important Information

Zentel Suspension is contraindicated in pregnancy - albendazole is known to be teratogenic and embryotoxic. Women of childbearing age should take the dose within the first 7 days of their menstrual cycle or after confirming a negative pregnancy test, and must use effective non-hormonal contraception during treatment and for at least one month after. Zentel is not recommended in children under 12 months of age. It should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Each 5ml of suspension contains:

• Albendazole 100mg (2% w/v)

• Children aged 12 to 24 months: 10ml (200mg) as a single dose

• Giardiasis (children above 2 years): 20ml (400mg) once daily for 5 days
