How It Works

Alfacalcidol is a form of vitamin D that the liver activates into calcitriol, the active hormone that helps your intestines absorb calcium from food and helps regulate parathyroid hormone. Because it does not need activation by the kidneys, One-Alpha is particularly useful for people whose kidney function is reduced and who cannot fully process standard vitamin D. By raising and stabilising blood calcium, it supports healthy bone mineralisation and helps manage the bone changes that can accompany long-term kidney conditions.

Dosage

Always take One-Alpha exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. Doses are adjusted based on your blood calcium levels.

1. Adults and children over 20 kg: a typical starting dose of 1 microgram per day, adjusted by your doctor.

2. Elderly patients: a typical starting dose of 0.5 microgram per day.

3. Maintenance doses generally range from 0.25 to 1 microgram per day based on your response.

4. Swallow the capsule whole with water and do not double up if you miss a dose.

Important Information

One-Alpha is a prescription-only medicine and should only be used under medical supervision. Do not use it if you have high blood calcium (hypercalcaemia), high vitamin D levels, or a sesame allergy. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, including antacids, thiazide diuretics, digoxin, bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine, and other vitamin D products, as these can interact. Your doctor will check your blood calcium regularly, especially at the start of treatment, to keep your dose correct. Store below 25 degrees C in the original packaging, keep out of the reach of children, and do not stop, start, or change your dose without first consulting your healthcare provider.
