Muscle spasms and extra acid produced when air bubbles form in a baby's stomach are the causes of gripe. The stomach produces acids, which ordinarily break down food particles, believing it is full of food when air bubbles become trapped in the stomach of a baby. These acids can irritate skin and are not necessary. The stomach's muscles are unable to relax because of the air bubbles in it, which results in cramps and spasms. Woodward's Gripe Water relieves wind and gripe quickly and contains sodium hydrogen carbonate and oil of dill plant. Dill oil releases trapped air bubbles in the stomach and warms and calms it. Acid in the baby's stomach is neutralized by sodium hydrogen carbonate.
